ਮਾਨੁਖੁ ਬਿਨੁ ਬੂਝੇ ਬਿਰਥਾ ਆਇਆ ॥ ਅਨਿਕ ਸਾਜ ਸੀਗਾਰ ਬਹੁ ਕਰਤਾ ਜਿਉ ਮਿਰਤਕੁ ਓਢਾਇਆ ॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ ਧਾਇ ਧਾਇ ਕ਼੍ਰਿਪਨ ਸ੍ਰਮੁ ਕੀਨੋ ਇਕਤ੍ਰ ਕਰੀ ਹੈ ਮਾਇਆ ॥ ਦਾਨੁ ਪੁੰਨੁ ਨਹੀ ਸੰਤਨ ਸੇਵਾ ਕਿਤ ਹੀ ਕਾਜਿ ਨ ਆਇਆ ॥1॥ ਕਰਿ ਆਭਰਣ ਸਵਾਰੀ ਸੇਜਾ ਕਾਮਨਿ ਥਾਟੁ ਬਨਾਇਆ ॥ ਸੰਗੁ ਨ ਪਾਇਓ ਅਪੁਨੇ ਭਰਤੇ ਪੇਖਿ ਪੇਖਿ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥2॥ ਸਾਰੋ ਦਿਨਸੁ ਮਜੂਰੀ ਕਰਤਾ ਤੁਹੁ ਮੂਸਲਹਿ ਛਰਾਇਆ ॥ ਖੇਦੁ ਭਇਓ ਬੇਗਾਰੀ ਨਿਆਈ ਘਰ ਕੈ ਕਾਮਿ ਨ ਆਇਆ ॥3॥ ਭਇਓ ਅਨੁਗ੍ਰਹੁ ਜਾ ਕਉ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਕੋ ਤਿਸੁ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਸਾਇਆ ॥ ਸਾਧਸੰਗਤਿ ਕੈ ਪਾਛੈ ਪਰਿਅਉ ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥4॥2॥4॥

ਹੇ ਦਾਸ ਨਾਨਕ! ਆਖ- ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਉਤੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਹੁੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਦੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਆਪਣਾ ਨਾਮ ਵਸਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸਾਧ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਦੀ ਸ਼ਰਨੀ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਆਨੰਦ ਮਾਣਦਾ ਹੈ।4।2।4।


English Translation

Todee, Fifth Mehl:

Without understanding, his coming into the world is useless. He puts on various ornaments and many decorations, but it is like dressing a corpse. || Pause ||

With great effort and exertion, the miser works to gather in the riches of Maya. He does not give anything in charity or generosity, and he does not serve the Saints; his wealth does not do him any good at all. || 1 ||

The soul-bride puts on her ornaments, embellishes her bed, and fashions decorations. But if she does not obtain the company of her Husband Lord, the sight of these decorations only brings her pain. || 2 ||

The man works all day long, threshing the husks with the pestle. He is depressed, like a forced laborer, and so he is of no use to his own home. || 3 ||

But when God shows His Mercy and Grace, He implants the Naam, the Name of the Lord, within the heart. Search the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy, O Nanak, and find the sublime essence of the Lord. || 4 || 2 || 4 ||

ਸਲੋਕ ॥

ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਜੀਭ ਨਾਲ ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਉਚਾਰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਜੋ ਕੰਨਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਸਿਫ਼ਤਿ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਦੀ ਪਵਿਤ਼੍ਰ ਬਾਣੀ ਸੁਣਦੇ ਹਨ ਤੇ ਜੋ ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਦਾ ਧਿਆਨ (ਧਰਦੇ ਹਨ,) ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਮੈਂ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਮਨੁੱਖਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਸਦਾ ਸਦਕੇ ਹਾਂ ।1। ਇਕ ਖਸਮ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਯਾਦ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਹੋਰ ਸਾਰੇ ਹੀ ਕੰਮ ਵਿਅਰਥ ਹਨ (ਭਾਵ, ਜੇ ਖਸਮ ਸਾਂਈ ਨੂੰ ਭੁਲਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਤਾਂ....) । ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਸਿਰਫ਼ ਉਹੀ ਬੰਦੇ ਭਾਗਾਂ ਵਾਲੇ ਹਨ, ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦਾ ਸਦਾ ਕਾਇਮ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨਾਲ ਪਿਆਰ ਹੈ ।2। ਮੈਂ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਬੰਦਿਆਂ ਤੋਂ ਸਦਾ ਕੁਰਬਾਨ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹਾਂ ਜੋ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀਆਂ ਗੱਲਾਂ ਸੁਣਦੇ ਹਨ । ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸਭ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਵਾਲੇ ਤੇ ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਚੰਗੇ ਹਨ ਜੋ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਅੱਗੇ ਸਿਰ ਨਿਵਾਉਂਦੇ ਹਨ । (ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ) ਉਹ ਹੱਥ ਸੋਹਣੇ ਲੱਗਦੇ ਹਨ ਜੋ ਬੇਅੰਤ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤਿ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਲਿਖਦੇ ਹਨ ਤੇ ਉਹ ਪੈਰ ਪਵਿੱਤ਼੍ਰ ਹਨ ਜੋ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਰਾਹ ਤੇ ਤੁਰਦੇ ਹਨ । (ਅਜੇਹੇ) ਸੰਤਾਂ ਦੀ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਵਿਚ (ਦੁੱਖ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਤੋਂ) ਬਚਾਉ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਸਾਰਾ ਦੁੱਖ ਦੂਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।14।

English Translation :

SHALOK:

With my tongue, I chant the Lord’s Name; with my ears, I listen to the Ambrosial Word of His Shabad. Nanak is forever a sacrifice to those who meditate on the Supreme Lord God. || 1 || All concerns are false, except those of the One Lord. O Nanak, blessed are those, who are in love with their True Lord. || 2 || PAUREE: I am forever a sacrifice to those who listen to the sermon of the Lord. Those who bow their heads before God are perfect and distinguished. Those hands, which write the Praises of the infinite Lord are beautiful. Those feet which walk on God’s Path are pure and holy. In the Society of the Saints, they are emancipated; all their sorrows depart. || 14 ||

ਹੇ ਹਰੀ! ਹੇ ਸੁਵਾਮੀ! ਮੈਂ ਪਪੀਹਾ ਤੇਰੇ ਨਾਮ-ਬੂੰਦ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਤੜਫ਼ ਰਿਹਾ ਹਾਂ। ਮੇਹਰ ਕਰ, ਤੇਰਾ ਨਾਮ ਮੇਰੇ ਵਾਸਤੇ (ਸਵਾਂਤੀ) ਬੂੰਦ ਬਣ ਜਾਏ। ਹੇ ਹਰੀ! ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਆਪਣੀ ਮੇਹਰ ਕਰ, ਅੱਖ ਦੇ ਝਮਕਣ ਜਿਤਨੇ ਸਮੇਂ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਹੀ ਮੇਰੇ ਮੂੰਹ ਵਿਚ ਆਪਣੇ ਨਾਮ ਦੀ ਸਵਾਂਤੀ ਬੂੰਦ ਪਾ ਦੇ।1। ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਮੈਂ ਰਤਾ ਭਰ ਸਮੇ ਲਈ ਭੀ ਰਹਿ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਕਦਾ। ਜਿਵੇਂ ਅਫ਼ੀਮ ਆਦਿਕ ਨਸ਼ੇ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਅਮਲੀ (ਨਸ਼ੇ ਦਾ ਆਦੀ) ਮਨੁੱਖ ਤੜਫ ਉੱਠਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤਿਵੇਂ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਮੈਂ ਘਬਰਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹਾਂ। ਰਹਾਉ। ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਤੂੰ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਦਾ ਬੜਾ ਹੀ ਡੂੰਘਾ ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਹੈਂ, ਅਸੀ ਤੇਰੀ ਡੂੰਘਾਈ ਦਾ ਅੰਤ ਰਤਾ ਭਰ ਭੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਲੱਭ ਸਕਦੇ। ਤੂੰ ਪਰੇ ਤੋਂ ਪਰੇ ਹੈਂ, ਤੂੰ ਬੇਅੰਤ ਹੈਂ। ਹੇ ਸੁਆਮੀ! ਤੂੰ ਕਿਹੋ ਜਿਹਾ ਹੈਂ ਤੇ ਕਿਤਨਾ ਵ੍ਡਾ ਹੈਂ-ਇਹ ਭੇਤ ਤੂੰ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਜਾਣਦਾ ਹੈਂ।2। ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਸੰਤ ਜਨਾਂ ਨੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਜਪਿਆ, ਉਹ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ੇ ਹੋਏ ਗੂੜ੍ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ-ਰੰਗ ਵਿਚ ਰੰਗੇ ਗਏ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਭਗਤੀ ਦਾ ਰੰਗ ਬਣ ਗਿਆ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਲੋਕ ਪਰਲੋਕ ਵਿਚ ਬੜੀ ਸੋਭਾ ਮਿਲੀ। ਜਿਨ੍ਾਂ ਨੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਜਪਿਆ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਉੱਤਮ ਇੱਜ਼ਤ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਹੋਈ।3। ਪਰ, ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਭਗਤੀ ਕਰਨ ਦੀ ਵਿਓਂਤ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਬਣਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ (ਢੋ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਢੁਕਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ), ਉਹ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਮਾਲਕ ਹੈ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਸੇਵਕ ਹੈ। ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਤੇਰਾ ਦਾਸ ਨਾਨਕ ਤੇਰੀ ਸਰਨ ਆਇਆ ਹੈ। ਤੂੰ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਆਪਣੇ ਭਗਤਾਂ ਦੀ ਇੱਜ਼ਤ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈਂ।4।5।

English Translation :

DHANAASAREE, FOURTH MEHL:

The Lord, Har, Har, is the rain-drop; I am the song-bird, crying, crying out for it. O Lord God, please bless me with Your Mercy, and pour Your Name into my mouth, even if for only an instant. || 1 || Without the Lord, I cannot live for even a second. Like the addict who dies without his drug, I die without the Lord. || Pause || You, Lord, are the deepest, most unfathomable ocean; I cannot find even a trace of Your limits. You are the most remote of the remote, limitless and transcendent; O Lord Master, You alone know Your state and extent. || 2 || The Lord’s humble Saints meditate on the Lord; they are imbued with the deep crimson color of the Guru’s Love. Meditating on the Lord, they attain great glory, and the most sublime honor. || 3 || He Himself is the Lord and Master, and He Himself is the servant; He Himself creates His environments. Servant Nanak has come to Your Sanctuary, O Lord; protect and preserve the honor of Your devotee. || 4 || 5 ||

ਹੇ ਮਾਂ! ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਚਰਨ (ਮੈਨੂੰ) ਪਿਆਰੇ ਲੱਗਦੇ ਹਨ । (ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ) ਵੱਡੀ ਕਿਸਮਤ ਨਾਲ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ (ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਮਿਲਾਪ) ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਦਰਸਨ ਕੀਤਿਆਂ (ਉਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ) ਕੋ਼੍ਰੜਾਂ (ਪੁੰਨਾਂ ਦੇ) ਫਲ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ ।ਰਹਾਉ। ਹੇ ਮਾਂ! (ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਚਰਨੀਂ ਪੈ ਕੇ) ਅਟੱਲ ਅਬਿਨਾਸੀ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਂਦਿਆਂ ਗਾਂਦਿਆਂ ਮੁੜ ਮੁੜ ਹੱਲਾ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਆਉਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਕਾਮ ਕੋ਼੍ਰਧ ਅਹੰਕਾਰ (ਆਦਿਕ ਵਿਕਾਰ) ਨਾਸ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ । (ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਬਰਕਤਿ ਨਾਲ ਜੇਹੜੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ) ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ-ਰੰਗ ਵਿਚ ਰੰਗੇ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ ਉਹ (ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਹੱਲਿਆਂ ਦੇ ਟਾਕਰੇ ਤੇ) ਅਡੋਲ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹ ਜਨਮ ਮਰਣ (ਦੀ ਚੱਕੀ) ਵਿਚ ਮੁੜ ਮੁੜ ਨਹੀਂ ਪੀਸੇ ਜਾਂਦੇ ।1। ਹੇ ਮਾਂ! (ਜੇਹੜੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਚਰਨੀਂ ਲੱਗਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹ) ਦਇਆ ਦੇ ਘਰ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਲ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਭਜਨ (ਦੇ ਆਨੰਦ) ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਹੋਰ ਸਾਰੇ ਹੀ (ਦੁਨੀਆਵੀ) ਸੁਆਦਾਂ ਤੇ ਤਮਾਸ਼ਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਝੂਠੇ ਜਾਣਦੇ ਹਨ । ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! (ਆਖ—ਹੇ ਮਾਂ!) ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਸੇਵਕ (ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈ ਕੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ) ਰਤਨ (ਵਰਗਾ ਕੀਮਤੀ) ਨਾਮ ਹਾਸਲ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ । ਹਰਿ-ਨਾਮ ਤੋਂ ਸੱਖਣੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਹੀ ਜੀਵ (ਆਪਣਾ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ) ਲੁਟਾ ਕੇ (ਜਗਤ ਤੋਂ) ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ ।2।8।27।

English Translation :

TODEE, FIFTH MEHL:

O mother, the Guru’s feet are so sweet. By great good fortune, the Transcendent Lord has blessed me with them. Millions of rewards come from the Blessed Vision of the Guru’s Darshan. || Pause || Singing the Glorious Praises of the imperishable, indestructible Lord, sexual desire, anger and stubborn pride vanish. Those who are imbued with the Love of the True Lord become permanent and eternal; birth and death do not grind them down any more. || 1 || Without the Lord’s meditation, all joys and pleasures are totally false and worthless; by the Kind Mercy of the Saints, I know this. Servant Nanak has found the jewel of the Naam; without the Naam, all must depart, cheated and plundered. || 2 || 8 || 27 ||
